Saturday, March 15 two of Mzansi’s bitter archrivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs will lock horns in a Soweto Derby. The whole country stands still when these two fotballing giants lock horns. Even those who don’t support soccer fulltime will be glued on their TV Sets to see who comes out victorious in the Soweto Derby.
Back in the day the derby use to take centre stage long before the actual date/week. Over the past 10 years the derby has lost its spark. We’ve seen many games drawn than wins. The derby hasn’t produced “that special player” who will steer his team to victory. Yes Benni McCarthy scored a brace against Chiefs in his short stint with the Buccaneers before Robajesa (Roger de Sa) sent him to retirement.
Chiefs had to bring back Knowledge Musona from Germany to rekindle the derby spark but the fact of the matter is that the Soweto Derby is not for strikers but midfielders. Chippa Chauke and Fetsi Molatedi comes to mind, Dumisa Ngobe and Thabo Mooki also comes to mind not forgetting the Little Napoleon Benedict Vilakazi, Lebohang Mokoena who sent Cyril Nzama to hospital for 6 Months with his dazzling skills, Helman Mkhalele and Brandon Silent who sent Ntsie Maphike and Rudolph Seale to retirement… damn those were the days.
Today’s derby is too tactical, players are more like robots as they are not allowed to express themselves hence the derby has lost its spark.
Well all will be finalised when the two giants lock horns but one thing to take note is Lehlohonolo Majoro and Vladimir Vermezovic has a score to settle with the Naturena based outfit which recently lost 2-0 to Platinum Stars, while Vermezovic won the Original Soweto Derby (Moroka Swallows vs Orlando Pirates) by an odd goal in his official debut as Bucs head coach.
Bucs will win the Soweto Derby and the winning goal will come from an unfamiliar source. It will be a humdinger of a game that will ensure that the so called unstoppable train comes to a crash.
