The Burger King-sponsored South African u20 Men’s National Team (Amajita) will face Guinea (Junior Syli Nationale) in the 3rd / 4th place playoff of the 14th edition of the CAF U20 African Cup of Nations in Zambia.
The bronze medal battle will take place on Sunday, 12 March 2017 at 14h00.
It will be the curtain raiser to the 2017 CAF u20 Africa Cup of Nations final between hosts Zambia and Senegal.
South Africa and Guinea have never met in an international match.
While both missed out on contesting the final, they managed to qualify for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup by virtue of making it to the top four of 2017 u20 AFCON where they were group runners up to Senegal and Zambia.
Amajita and Junior Syli Nationale lost by 1-0 margins to Zambia and Senegal respectively in the semi finals.
The South Africans have now turned their focus to the FIFA U20 World Cup, which will take place in South Korea from 20 May – 11 June 2017.
Thabo Senong’s charges will use the 3rd/4th place playoff match as part of their first phase of preparations for the prestigious tournament.
“We are in World Cup mode now, and everything we are doing going forward is in line with those preparations. The technical team is now focusing on some of the weaknesses we picked up throughout the AFCON,” said Senong, Amajita head coach.
“Guinea will be a good opponent for us, first for our players to fight for the bronze because it would be very nice to conclude the tournament with a medal. Secondly, they will test us in many departments – we look forward to keeping a compact defence, like we did against Zambia. We want to concede less free kicks and ensure that the players stay focused and disciplined in critical phases of the game.”
South Africa and Guinea meet at National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, and will be broadcast live on SS9.
The final between Zambia and Senegal will follow at same venue at 17h30.
