SAFA, NFD clubs searching for Nedbank Cup upsets

As the Nedbank Cup round of 16 fixtures kick-off on Friday night, clubs from the SAFA structures and the National First Division are preparing to upset the odds this coming weekend.

Out of the 16 clubs, six of them are from SAFA and NFD structures. The clubs are: Steenberg United (ABC Motsepe), EC Bees (ABC Motsepe), Richards Bay (NFD), Stellenbosch FC (NFD), Ubuntu Cape Town (NFD) and Royal Eagles (NFD).

Tickets are on sale for all the Nedbank Cup round of 16 fixtures. Tickets can be purchased at Ticket Pro outlets nationwide including Jet Stores, CNA, Edgars and Postnet.

On Friday night, Ubuntu Cape Town – fresh from their upset of Polokwane City and an impressive form in the NFD, will travel to Durban to play AmaZulu at King Zwelithini Stadium. Kick-off is at 20h00. Tickets are R40 for adults and R15 for children.

On Saturday afternoon (15h30), another Cape side, Steenberg United from SAFA structures will have a difficult task when they travel north to play Baroka FC. Tickets are also R40. Steenberg United are no strangers to this competition – but reaching the round of 16 has been their biggest achievement so far. They will be drawing inspiration from Baroka FC’s story in the Nedbank Cup – a side that came from lower structures to cause many upsets and made a name for itself.

Stellenbosch FC – a side that eliminated high-flying NFD outfit Highlands Park in the round of 32, have another date with Kaizer Chiefs in Durban’s Moses Mabhida. The last time the two sides met in the Nedbank Cup, Stellenbosch FC came out second. However, they have been talking up their chances against Amakhosi realising that a win against one of the country’s most popular club will win them many hearts. Tickets for this encounter are R60 and R15.

On Sunday, Royal Eagles – who have been undergoing change under Roger Sikhakhane – are at home against neighbours, Maritzburg United at Princess Magogo Stadium. Tickets are R40.

The last club from the SAFA structures to be in action will be EC Bees from Bisho in the Eastern Cape. They have a mountain to climb against a Mamelodi Sundowns outfit that has been on form on Tuesday night. Kick-off is at 19h30.
