Roodepan Primary school, from Kimberley will be representing the Frances Baard region at the under-12 Danone Nations Cup Northern Cape provincial final on Saturday, 25 March for the third time.
The Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington will host the soccer finals which will kick-off at 10am with 5 schools playing for a chance to represent their province at the national finals happening in Gauteng on 1 July.
Roodepan won the regional finals this past weekend after winning three regional final matches and drawing one which put them top of the log narrowly beating fellow Sol Plaatjie contenders, Pescodia Primary School.
This will be the third year the school has made it to the provincials. In both previous encounters they managed to go on and compete in the nationals, where they finished in fifth position in 2014 and 6th position in 2015.
The majority of players in the team played in 2016 as well explained manager, Enricho Chapman. “We were beaten by Beacon Primary School in last year’s provincials and the players are motivated and determined get the team back to the nationals again and uphold the winning reputation we are known for.”
Preparations for Saturday are on track, said Chapman. “We have again employed the services of external coach, Christopher Jafta, who has been with us since 2010. He has a Youth Coaching and Life Skills certificate from Football Forever and is the best person to coach as opposed to one of the teachers.”
It has not been an easy build up as the school is currently in the Athletics season. This was compounded by the fact that they only have a week to prepare for the provincials finals so Chapman has not been able to arrange any practice games. “To get the team best prepared for Saturday I have had to include extra training sessions,” he said.
There will be five schools competing at the provincials. The competing Northern Cape schools will be:
JTG district – Bankhara Bodulong Primary School
Namakwa district – Aggeneys Primary School
Pixley ka Seme district – Laerskool Kareeville
ZF Mgcawu district – Die Kuli Intermediate School
Francis Baard district – Roodepan Primary School
Gates open at 9am and entrance is free for the public. Danone will further be supplying Nutriday yoghurt and Yogisip to all spectators.
