North West gets new COPA Coca-Cola champions

Seiphemelo High School were crowned the new champions of COPA Coca-Cola North West Provincial Play Offs held at the Alabama Stadium in Klerksdorp on Saturday, 11 August. Seiphemelo finished top of their group in the round robin format of the competition which included three other competing schools namely, Gaopalelwe Secondary School, Sol Plaatjie Secondary School and Eletsa Secondary School.

The new North West champions had a challenging opening encounter against a highly spirited Gaopalelwe Secondary School with the match ending in an evenly balanced 1-1 draw. Their second match was not any easier against Sol Plaatjie as they came back from behind to salvage a one all draw which meant that their final match against Eletsa Secondary School was a much-needed win. This game was completed emphatically with a 3-0 victory to finish top of the log and successfully secure a place in the COPA Coca-Cola National Finals.

Gaopalelwe Secondary School, who were Seiphemelo’s closest rivals, also drew their match against Eletsa Secondary School. Their 3-1 win over Sol Plaatjie was unfortunately not enough to see them top the group with goal difference being the decider of the North West champions.

With Seiphemelo High School securing their spot to represent the North West province in the upcoming COPA Coca-Cola National Finals set to take place in Port Elizabeth between 26-29 September, the global U15 school’s tournament heads to KwaZulu-Natal this weekend to determine who will represent the KZN province in the highly anticipated COPA Coca-Cola National Finals.

As an addition to this year’s COPA Coca-Cola tournament, Coca-Cola launched its COPA Coca-Cola Future Stars quest. COPA Coca-Cola Future Stars seeks to handpick talented players with potential and will be chosen by COPA Coca-Cola Ambassador, Jabu “Shuffle” Mahlangu. Mahlangu alongside a team of talent scouts comprising of former players in Simba Marumo, Jabulani Mendu and SA U17 assistant coach, Vela Khumalo, will hand pick the talented players. The selected players will have an opportunity to be part of a unique training camp scheduled to take place at the High-Performance Centre in Pretoria later this year.
