Neymar Jr’s Signature Football competition returns to SA

When one of the world’s greatest football talents conjures up an idea for a football tournament, you know you’re in for something special. That’s what happened with the Brazil and Barcelona great, Neymar Jr, when he came up with the concept of the Neymar Jr’s Five.

The fast moving, fun and technical game injected excitement into the beautiful game like never before. Now in its second year, the tournament is set to step it up another level with a whole host more local qualifiers that kick off this weekend. These in turn lead into the local final which takes place in Newtown, Johannesburg on June 16, 2017.

The inaugural edition featured more than 65,000 people taking part across six continents and 47 countries. This year teams from around the world will again set out in the hope of making it all the way from the qualifiers to the World Final in July at the Instituto Projeto Neymar Jr in Praia Grande, Brazil.

“I think nobody expected so many people in the first edition. We were really satisfied, really happy. I hope this number grows even bigger,” the man himself, commented ahead of this year’s edition.

Neymar Jr. also dished out some advice for prospective teams: “Be happy, no matter the result, no matter how hard it is. I hope they can have fun with Neymar Jr’s Five, because this is the most important – be happy, have fun and I wish them all the best again.”

Build your team of 5-7 players between the ages of 16-25 (two players over 25 are allowed per team) and start your journey to Praia Grande. But, know this, it’s a tournament with a twist. You need to outplay your opponents within 10 minutes to win the game. And – here’s the real kick – every time one team scores, the other team loses a player. This makes it a very technical as well as tactical game. Get your team together, select one of the South Africa qualifiers from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban to Stellenbosch, Ballito, Soweto and the all new Alex Mall, and start training!

There will be regional tournaments held from 13th May until 4th June across Johannesburg, Durban and Cape Town, with the regional winning teams going head to head in the National Finals at a secret street football venue in Newtown, Johannesburg on Youth Day, 16th June. Team entry fees are R700 per team of 7 players.
