Nelson Mandela Bay is fast becoming the favourite hunting ground for our Senior Women’s National Team.
The City was yet again selected to host the annual COSAFA Women’s Championship – and what a match the 2019 final was!
On behalf of a very proud host City, Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, Councillor Mongameli Bobani and Deputy Executive Mayor Tshonono Buyeye with Member of Mayoral Committee of Sport, Recreation and Arts and Culture, Cllr Lehlohonolo Mfana and MMC of Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture, Cllr Marlon Daniels honoured the victorious Banyana Banyana – who retained their COSAFA Women’s Championship title for three years in a row after beating Zambia 1-0 in the final of the 2019 edition.
The clash took place on Sunday (11 August) at Wolfson Stadium, Nelson Mandela Bay.
Executive Mayor Mongameli Bobani commended the bravery shown by Coach Ellis and her team over the spirited Zambia on the football pitch.
“In this Women’s Month, this victory will hopefully inspire many more young Nelson Mandela Bay girls, and also around the country, to pursue their dreams and to believe in achieving their goals. You are all mavericks for women’s sport in your own right and I am hopeful our partnership can produce many more Eastern Cape female footballers of the same calibre as yourselves. We are proudly associated with your brand and hope that we will be for many years to come,” said Mayor Bobani.
President of the South African Football Association (SAFA), Dr Danny Jordaan, congratulated the team at the event. Some SAFA NEC Members accompanied Dr Jordaan
“Nelson Mandela Bay continues to be a happy hunting ground for Banyana Banyana. I would like to thank the Honourable Executive Mayor and the Metro for their continuous support, embracing the team and other women’s team from the Southern Africa,” said Dr Jordaan.
This was Banyana Banyana’s 6th COSAFA Cup title.
