Mr. 2010 – I love eating pap and stake!!

Tell us about yourself…

My name is Thulani Ngcobo. I live in Pretoria-Soshanguve but my home town is in Port Shepstone at Kwa-Nzimakwe. I am a die-hard soccer fan and Kaizer Chiefs is my favorite team.

I spend most of my weekends at the stadium giving Chiefs and Bafana Bafana my full support. I have attended about 95% of Chiefs home games and about 80% away games since 2001 to date. I don’t only attend Chiefs games but if other Premier Soccer League (PSL) teams are playing, I do go to the stadium for the love of the game. My second team is SuperSport United. I am in the Guinness World Records for attending the most FIFA World Cup games in one tournament.

When did you start following Kaizer Chiefs?

I have been supporting Chiefs since I was 8 years old. My uncles loved soccer and I love soccer because of them.

Which was your favourite game this season?

Mamelodi Sundowns vs Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versveld where Chiefs won the game by one goal to nothing (0-1)… it was a great!

What happening to Kaizer Chiefs this season (League, Nedbank Cup, CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup)?

Chiefs has been under pressure this season as we were the defending champions of the 2012/13 league and the Nedbank Cup. When things went our way towards the end of the season, our players were over excited and they started taking things easy. Unfortunately they lost focus and dropped many points.

We also relied to the games we had in hand and forgot that games in hand are not points. I think this is a lesson to our entire squad to start knowing that it is not over until the last whistle of the last PSL game is blown. It is good to fail so that you can learn from it.

Which players should Stuart Baxter let go/buy for next season?

I think no one should be released so far and I hope that we can sign Keagan Dolly from Ajax Cape Town, Lindokuhle Mbatha and Mogakolodi Ngele from Platinum Stars respectively. They really play good football and age is still on their side. I also like their conducts on and off the field.

What is the earliest time you’ve been in the stadium this season?

Yoh! The earliest time is three hours before the game starts. I like to arrive early at the stadium and leave late because I really forget that there is a word called “problem” in life when I’m at the stadium.

And what do you do to keep yourself busy before kick off?

I just network with people at the stadium. I enjoy spending my time at the stadium. If I had enough money and a huge yard, I would build my own stadium and call it “NGCOBO2010 Stadium”.

Is the food nice at the stadium? What mostly do you eat and drink?

The food is delicious!! I love eating pap and stake with some salads on and I drink any soft drink. Well, I’m no longer drinking alcohol hey but I used to enjoy my Strongbow Cider and Whiskey! Hahaha!

Which one do you prefer Carling Black Label Cup or Telkom Charity Cup?

I prefer Telkom Charity Cup because firstly to us soccer lovers, there was a great excitement of voting for your team to qualify for the tournament. It was also a great time for different coaches to assess their new players and also for us for fans to watch our new players play. There was a lot of money donated to charity. And I enjoyed spending the whole day at the stadium meeting different teams’ supporters.

You’ve been nominated for the Gauteng Sports Awards. Tell us how did this happen?

Firstly the main aim of the Gauteng Sports Awards is to recognise and honour individuals and teams who have excelled both on and off the field on an annual basis which will culminate to the National Awards.

The Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation asked the public to submit the nomination forms of the people they think they deserve the award and my colleagues Zeth Ngwasheng and Kgopotso Mathebula normally see me going to the stadium every weekend and they filled and sent the nomination form through to the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation with my details on it.

There were panel of sports expects judges to select the finalists and I was invited to the Gauteng Sports Awards nomination event in Melrose Arc on the 30th of April 2014. I was happy to have been nominated for the second time in a row as I was nominated last year (2013).

I believe that I did not win last year’s award because people assumed that I will win it and they did not vote. I would like to urge the public to vote for me as many times as they can to help me win this award. You can vote by SMSing GSA14 FAN NGCOBO to 33525. SMS charged at R1.50. You can sms as many times as you can. Thanking you in advance!
