Maize Cup pre-season tournament to show new signings

Top class football coupled with award winning entertainment will be coming to South Africa’s Bokone Bophirima Province once again with the third edition of the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup, to be played Saturday the 15th of July, 2017 at the James Motlatsi Stadium in Orkney.

The four teams unveiled to participate in this annual tournament are Platinum Stars, Free State Stars, Kaizer Chiefs & Botswana’s League Champions, Township Rollers.

Platinum Stars who, as hosts are seeded and are current competitors in the CAF confederation Cup will be pitted against either Botswana’s League Champions, Township Rollers or PSL Free State Stars. Due to their League standing position Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs FC will also be seeded and could also draw either of the two clubs.

Kaizer Chiefs have a lot to prove since their 4th place finish in the Premier League, whilst Free State Stars, having reached a lowly 14th position on the PSL log, will want to pull up their socks for this forthcoming season.

The previous editions of the Maize Cup exposed great quality football and were the precursors to the start of the footballing season. The inaugural edition in 2015, featuring 4 clubs, was won by Platinum Stars. The following year saw Orlando Pirates fight off against the hosts, Platinum Stars to lift the trophy with a 3-1 penalty shoot-out win.

On the entertainment front, fans will be wowed by veteran gospel artist, Solly Moholo, Akulaleki hitmaker and current SAMA ‘best kwaito’ album winner, Dr Malinga, recently awarded ‘Best female artist’, Bucie, Bhizer of ‘Gobisiqolo’ fame as well as DJs & various cultural acts who will all be performing and entertaining the crowds throughout the day.

The North West Province is delighted to have four top teams competing in the Bokone Bophirima Maize Cup this year and looks forward to an outstanding day of entertainment for local and travelling fans.

The Province gives thanks to all their stakeholders, particularly VBS Mutual Bank, the City of Matlosana as well as the grain producers in
the Bokone Bophirima, Free State and Mpumalanga provinces, who have helped to make this tournament a reality.

“Through this Maize Cup, the Provincial Government seeks to provide an opportunity to all soccer loving citizens from the Province and beyond, to enjoy a thrilling day of entertaining soccer and that contributes to efforts to rebrand, reposition and renew the Province” says the spokesperson of the North West Provincial Government, Mr. Freddy Sepeng.

The match will provide football-starved fans with top quality pre-season action and an opportunity to see some of the new recruits ahead of the 2016/2017 campaign. All four teams will be looking for good performances as they continue to prepare for the new season.
The province will be giving away free beanies to the first 2000 fans coming into the stadium
