As a matter of principle, I do not support the match between Mamelodi Sundowns and Barcelona. I don’t even care if I am the only citizen who holds this principled view.
Now, at issue here is not whether or not the match is staged while the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season is still in progress. That is immaterial. What is upsetting is that, no matter how Mamelodi Sundowns or the PSL exaggerate the importance of this game, its timing goes against logic on many fronts.
Over and above the immaterial issue mentioned in the second paragraph, the scheduling of this match has completely undermined the value of CAF and African football in general.
It fails logic that the continent’s number one club competition takes a secondary position to a friendly match which further eats into the pockets of the African.
Secondly, with the World Cup around the corner, it is beyond obvious that the so-called stars of Barcelona will give half hearted or non-hearted displays on the day, for obvious reasons. Which basically renders the match useless!
Finally, the very same Mamelodi Sundowns, through its former player called Pitso Mosimane, will be reminding all who care to listen to his nonsense about how this club doesn’t get a break.
Instead of taking selfies like all normal players, his players have an added match on May 22 due to this poorly timed Nelson Mandela friendly. Pathetic!
In conclusion, this game is given a firm middle finger… I am further tempted to extend it to all those who are gullible and buy into this charity rubbish…
