Engen’s commitment to the development of South Africa’s youth has been recognised, with the country’s leading petroleum brand* winning the ‘Development Programme of the Year’ at the 2018 Sport Industry Awards.
The 2018 Sport Industry Awards were held at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday, 17 August 2018, to honour achievement across the business of sport, including the most outstanding and innovative work in marketing, PR, advertising, community investment and sponsorship.
Engen’s youth development centres on the Engen Knockout Challenge, which since inception in 2003 has grown into arguably South Africa’s leading under-18 football event.
Held annually, the Engen Knockout Challenge comprises five regional tournaments and culminates in the Engen Champ of Champs to determine an overall national winner.
The Engen Knockout Challenge was one of six shortlisted in the Sports Development category of the 2018 Sport Industry Awards.
The other nominated programmes were those of the SA Rugby Legends Association, SA Rugby, NBA Africa, Blue Label Telecoms and Ajax Cape Town.
Speaking after receiving the award, Engen Brand and Sponsorship Manager, Bulela Mkandawire thanked all of Engen’s stakeholders for contributing to the success of the petroleum giant’s youth development efforts.

Over the past 16 years, the Engen Knockout Challenge has given over 30 000 aspiring football stars a platform to showcase their talent, with 180 Engen Knockout Challenge Alumni progressing into the professional ranks and some featuring for Bafana Bafana.
