Day 28: Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge

Bidvest Wits midfielder Xola Mlambo has applauded Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge debutants, La-Masia FC following their 2-1 win over The Boys FC in their semi-final clash against them, also adding that they a stand a higher chance of winning the tournament as compared to their finalist opponents.

The Westbury-based outfit will lock horns with Senaoane Gunners FC on Friday afternoon’s big finale (Kick-off 2.30pm), who beat Dzakaroski 2-0 in their semi-final clash on Thursday, and Mlambo stated that Gunners should brace themselves for a tricky encounter if they are to see themselves causing an upset in this upcoming tie.

“I’m very impressed with the standard of football which’s on display here,” Mlambo said. “It’s been very entertaining from the onset up until now. The matches are very competitive, hence people always go out of their way to come (and watch matches for the whole day). And that’s mainly because it’s never a waste of time for them come through, given the quality that’s here.

“It’s good to see a team which qualified ahead of my former side (Sabelo Super Stars FC who finished third in their Group E matches, two points behind La-Masia), and then going all the way to the final of a tournament,” Mlambo added. “They are very good side and I also do believe that they stand a good chance of winning it.”

Mlambo’s high believe on La-Masia winning it in their first appearance in this developmental cup competition, comes from after having observed how the team fights for one another up in the final third up and also in their defence as well. The player also added that La-Masia were just a marvel to watch and that Gunners would really need to pay close attention to central midfielder, Corbin ‘Zizou’ Woodington, if they are to stand a fighting chance against them.

“‘Zizou’ is very a good player,” Mlambo said. “He’s one of those midfielders who never spends too much time on the ball. His passing game is really good as well. He knows how to pinpoint his passes directly to a player he wants them to go tp. And that’s what (makes him deadly and) a marvel to watch on the field.”
