Atletico Madrid “deserve” the Spanish title

Barcelona captain Xavi believes his team “deserve” to win the Spanish title after a testing season for the Catalan club off the pitch.”

No! Atletico Madrid deserves it so much more than Barcelona. They’ve been the ones playing the entertaining football, reached the UEFA Champions League final, have coaching and managerial staff not embroiled in controversy and have worked hard to reach the summit of Spanish football this year.

Barcelona are playing lackluster football and would struggle to break into the top 4 of any of the other top European leagues over the course of a 38 game season. They have no ‘plan b’, play far too rigidly and lack any dynamism if Lionel Messi isn’t on form. The fact they’ve been caught up in these damning allegations has further cast more doubt over how they are run.

How they got so far in the Champions League this year is a mystery and it’s only because of Real Madrid’s faltering end to the year that they find themselves in contention with winning the league.

Madrid have shown they can best Barca in the Champions League but I just hope they don’t crumble at the final hurdle and avoid defeat to lift the La Liga title. They have a great manager in Diego Simeone – it would be a shame if boring Barcelona won the league. Exciting teams like both Madrid’s (Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid) should be rewarded for their style of play, not predictable, possession-based sides like Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
